Different Soaps You Can Try

Many books give you numerous recipes that are really only a couple of soaps dressed up with different scents and colors. Instead, I’ll now give you a variety of basic soaps that are easy to make. Creative choices of scent and appearance remain for you—‌a visit to the Web site of any major soapmaking supplier will probably give you enough inspiration to last about five years.

My recipes include a good assortment of soaps that use only grocery or health food store fats. Other recipes call for fats that probably are available only from soapmaking suppliers. Good sources are listed in the resources section of this book, and you may be lucky enough to find a local vendor. Local prices are often higher, but count shipping costs when you compare.

If you’re making soap for others, be aware that some people are highly allergic to particular fats.

All my recipes use 30 oz of fat (850 g). You need a soap mold that will hold at least 5 cups (1.2 l) of liquid.

Follow the directions I’ve already given, unless a recipe calls for a variation.

Recipe Checking

Before you try a new soap recipe—‌mine or anyone else’s—‌always check the given lye and water amounts to make sure they’re correct. Even if the recipe comes from a published book, don’t use it till you’re sure it has no errors—‌and that goes double for any recipe you find on the Internet.

Though you can do the math yourself, the simplest and safest way to check a recipe is with a lye calculator. These tell you how much lye and water you should use for a given quantity of fat. Many such calculators can be found and used on the Web for free, and they’re found in some computer programs as well. I’ve listed some of both kinds in the resources section, along with Web sites that explain how to calculate by hand.
